Deck formats — Magic: The Gathering

MTG has the widest variety of formats. Constructed formats let you build your deck in advance; Limited formats use cards opened at the event. Click each format to see the validation rules.

Universal rules (all MTG Constructed formats)

  • Conspiracy cards: this special card type is always banned in competitive formats.
  • "Ante" mechanics: cards with ante mechanics are banned in all official formats.
  • Offensive cards: cards removed by Wizards of the Coast for being offensive are universally banned.
  • Stickers or Attraction cards: only legal in formats that explicitly support them.
  • Color identity (Commander formats): includes mana symbols in the card's rules text, not just the mana cost.
The Odhinbox deck validator applies these rules automatically when checking a deck.
